Understanding Card Skimming and How to Prevent It

Skimming is a technique used by thieves to capture your card's magnetic stripe and PIN at ATMs, gas stations, or retail locations. By attaching a special device to card readers, they can collect your details and potentially withdraw money from your bank account.

Safeguarding Your Information

To enhance your security, opt for signature-based debit card transactions. When making a purchase, choose "credit" instead of "debit" at the checkout. This doesn't mean you're using a credit card; it's simply a way to process your transaction that still deducts funds from your checking account. Plus, signature transactions often include Visa's Zero Liability protection against unauthorized charges.

If you need cash back during a transaction, you'll need to select "debit" and use your PIN. Always cover the keypad when entering your PIN to prevent onlookers from seeing it.

Best Practices at ATMs and Gas Pumps For added security:

  • Use your debit card as a credit card at gas pumps to avoid entering your PIN.
  • Favor ATMs located at banks, as they are less vulnerable to skimmers.
  • Sign the back of your card as soon as you receive it.
  • Keep your card within view during transactions.
  • Never store your card and PIN together.
  • Never share your PIN with anyone and change it immediately if you suspect it's been compromised.
  • Always collect and securely dispose of merchant receipts to protect your account information.
